How to Get Urine Stains Out of a Carpet

Urine stains can lead to permanent damage on the carpet if not taken care of. This is because the longer the pet urine stays on the carpet, the more embedded it gets into the fibres, worsening the stain and giving off a nasty odor that won’t go away. Although, its best to fix it immediately, at times circumstances prevent this from happening.

If you’re looking for ways on how to remove urine stains on your carpet, then we’ve got you covered as this blog is going to give you exactly that.

But first, why does a urine stain linger?

Urine is highly acidic. Much damage is not caused if the stain is taken care of immediately but once it dries, the pH level in the acid increases, making ideal conditions for bacteria to grow. This bacteria causes the acid to oxidize, staining the carpet. This also causes the organic matter in the urine to cause an unpleasant odor. The longer the stain stays, the worse the odor gets and the harder the urine stain gets to remove.

Ways to Clean Old Urine Stains on a Carpet

  1. Blot: Fold a dry cloth or towel and press it firmly or blot over the stain so it absorbs as much urine as is possible.
  2. Baking soda to the rescue: Sprinkle baking soda and leave it for 30 minutes on the stain, to remove any remaining urine and lingering odor. Make sure you vacuum the baking soda on the carpet to remove it.
  3. Use vinegar: For stains that are a day or two old, soak up the moisture on the carpet by blotting with a towel and baking soda, and then follow it up by blotting it with a solution of one part vinegar and two parts water, although make sure you don’t use the vinegar on fresh stains.
  4. Enzymatic cleaner: These types of cleansers are available in pet shops. They work by cutting through the bacteria and eradicating both the stain and odor.

Don’ts to Remember When Cleaning Urine Stains

  • Don’t use acidic cleaners or those that have a high pH, as this can lead to worsening of the urine stain and damaging the carpet irreversibly.
  • Avoid steam cleaning or applying heat to urine stains as this can cause them to set and be permanent.
  • Do not rub the wet area on the carpet, as this will lead to the stain accumulating deeply into the fibres, making it more difficult to remove.
